Weight Loss Diet
There are many ways to go about dieting to lose weight, some for short term loss and others for long term loss. Some diets are safe while others are questionable and others are hazardous to one's well-being. Some more popular diets are online dieting, dieting with prepackaged foods, fad diets, diets based on the glycemic index, dieting through emotional restructure or dieting through fitness.
The Atkins diet starts with a two-week period that restricts carbohydrate intake to 20-grams in the theory that reducing carbohydrates forces the body to burn fat and create less new fat. The next period adds a small amount of carbohydrates back into the diet and is carefully managed on a weekly basis. The next two stages of the diet are for maintenance purposes, adding just enough carbohydrates to maintain weight. If weight is being added on, too many carbohydrates are being allowed in the body and should be reduced. Criticism of the Atkins diet is mostly surrounded by the fact that high-fat intake is acceptable and that this is a short term only diet.
Another popular diet is Dr. Phil McGraw's diet program which focuses on healthy thinking first and then on healthy eating. Many people eat when depressed and can be the root of weight issues. This diet concerns itself with addressing emotional eating and not so clearly on nutritional eating. While deciding what healthy eating process is best for you, Dr. Phil McGraw's emotional guidelines may assist you in weight loss and in other areas of your life.
eDiets is an online weight loss program and is currently the largest one.For paying a subscription fee you receive customized diet and meal plans, recipes forone's meal plan, shopping list, email assistance, online tools and calculators. Originally a calorie-controlled nutritionally-balanced plan, it now accepts several other plans to suit different tastes and specific health needs, such as diabetic, vegetarian or low sodium to name a few. There is a survey to help one decide which is best suited for what a person is looking for. Newly added is an optional meal delivery plan which can be added for additional costs. Since starting in 1996, eDiets has many success stories, however, it is still relatively young in the diet game to show long term success.
Another more popular diet is the Glycemic Impact Diet, based on the glycemic index, which has been known for some time -- yet the diet it's based on is relatively new, though popular with the medical field and public. The glycemic index is a ranking of carbohydrate foods which measures the blood glucose level rise when a particular food is eaten. Measurements are made against pure glucose which has a rating of 100, therefore the higher the GI - the closer it is to 100. Low GI ratings will be absorbed more slowly and keep the blood sugar levels constant. The glycemic load corrects the figure for serving size or consumed amount, but the total consumed each day advisably should be under 500. The Glycemic Diet is deemed sensible and possible to follow long term and will bring about steady weight loss over a long period of time.
The NutriSystem Nourish program is based on the Glycemic Index available through the company's website. Prepackaged meals accurate to portions based on a person's calorie count are delivered to a customer's door. This program has been noted as useful for a short term weight loss, since a customer will not be purchasing for his or her entire life and it does not teach one to portion control on a person's own.
Weight Watchers is a long surviving and successful diet program offering several avenues for weight loss help. They offer two plans to choose from as well as food products, personal support group meetings, many recipes and cookbooks, as well as a magazine and a website devoted to helping people lose weight by training oneself to live healthy mentally, emotionally and physically.
Fad diets come in every shape and form and are countless. Everything from a cabbage soup diet to celebrity diets. Not many are proven to work, some may be even harmful to the body and are certainly not meant for long term use.
