Introduction to Obesity
Today, the subject of obesity is of much concern to millions of people all over the world. Not only has it sparked a lot of talk, but it has also begun to be ranked as a serious risk comparable to certain diseases. In fact, some doctors even call obesity itself a disease. So what exactly is obesity and what do you need to know about it? (read some facts on obesity) What is obesity? What Is Your BMI? BMI, or "body mass index," is the formula we use to find out the ratio between your weight and your height. In order to find out what your BMI is, first find your weight, in pounds, and your height, in inches. If using pounds and inches, use the following formula to find your BMI: lbs/inches2 * 704.5. In other words, your BMI is the number of pounds divided by the number of inches squared times 704.5. Or, if using kilograms and meters, divide the weight in kilograms by the square of the person's height in meters and you have your answer. Is Your BMI over 30? If your BMI was under 25, then you're weight is probably very healthy for your body type. If it was between 25 and 29, then you should probably start focusing on getting your body healthier so that you don't become obese. If you are already obese and have a BMI around 30, don't panic! While you are generally classified as obese when you have a BMI of over 30, it's not something to stress about. Instead, it's something that is supposed to increase your awareness about your body and promote healthier living. I don't want to be obese. My BMI is over 30, what do I do? No one wants to be obese, yet there are billions all around the world. This is why it's so important that you take constant care of your body, by eating healthy and getting adequate exercise. In today's world, where things tend to be done in a hurry, we often need to squeeze in time for ourselves. But it's worth it. Often, just by eating a little healthier and exercising a little more, we can add years onto our life! The key is to start practicing better habits now, even if you have to start small. Then, gradually increase the amount of changes you make. In conclusion, obesity is a serious risk to our health. However, there is nothing stopping us from changing the habits we have now into better ones that prolong our life! Even those who are not obese should be aware of how they treat their bodies. Even if they aren't obese now, bad eating and exercise habits can have negative effects later on in life, even if there aren't any signs now. Hopefully, after reading this article, you will seek to start living a healthier life -- regardless of whether you are obese or not.
